Jan Holmgren, MD, Ph.D., is a Professor of Medical Microbiology, University of Gothenburg, Sweden and founding Director of the Gothenburg University Vaccine Research Institute. Sergey Suchkov was born in the City of Astrakhan, Russia, in a family of dynasty medical doctors. In 1980, graduated from Astrakhan State Medical University and was awarded with MD. Camille Locht, PhD, holds currently a position as Research Director at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) and was the founding director of the Center for Infection and Immunity of Lille at the Institut Pasteur de Lille. He has obtained his PhD at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, in 1984. After a 3-years post-doctoral stay at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, USA, where he started to work on pertussis and cloned the pertussis toxin genes, he joined SmithKline-Beecham (now GSK) to help developing acellular pertussis vaccines. Since 1989 he is the head of a research laboratory at the Institut Pasteur de Lille, where he has been the Scientific Director from 2002 to 2013. His research interest is in molecular pathogenesis of respiratory infections, essentially pertussis and tuberculosis, with the long-term aim to develop new tools to combat these diseases. A very powerful molecular typing system for mycobacteria, invented in his laboratory has already reached the market, and a live attenuated nasal pertussis vaccine has now successfully completed phase I and phase II trials and will shortly enter phase III. He also has discovered a protective mycobacterial latency antigen, called heparin-binding haemagglutinin (HBHA), which appears to be a powerful tool for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis and for risk stratification of latently infected subjects. He has authored more than 350 international publications, book chapters and patents and has obtained several national and international research awards.

John Milburn Jessup, MD is a former surgical oncologist and then Chief of the Diagnostics Evaluation Branch and Intramural Principal Investigator at the National Cancer Institute where he facilitated development of molecular diagnostics for use in cancer clinical trials and developed an oncolytic adenovirus. Now as a Research Scientist at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Centerhe is developing cancer vaccine that induces immunogenic cell death by combining the oncolytic adenovirus with Oxaliplatin in preclinical models. The intended clinical use is to turn cold colorectal carcinoma liver metastases into hot lesions that respond to immunotherapy.

Jacques Pouysségur, CNRS Research Director Emeritus, graduated from an Engineering School in Biochemistry of the University of Lyon, where he obtained his PhD in 1972. He spent two years as a post-doctoral scientist at the National Cancer Institute of NIH (USA) and established his own research group in 1978 at the CNRS Biochemistry Centre of the University of Nice. After directing the CNRS Institute of Signalling, Developmental Biology and Cancer Research up to 2008, his team joined the new Research Institute of Cancer & Aging (IRCAN) in Nice and the Biomedical Department of the Centre Scientifique of Monaco (CSM). Jacques Pouysségur has previous experience in bacterial and somatic cell genetics, metabolism, Na-H exchanger, pH regulation, G protein-coupled receptors and MAP kinase signaling in the context of growth control in mammalian cells. In the last 25 years his group developed a strong interested in hypoxia signalling, oxygen and nutrient sensing, angiogenesis, autophagy amino-acid transporters, oxidative stress, cancer metabolism, Warburg effect and immuno-suppression. He is member of AACR, EMBO, the French and European Academy of Sciences and the past President of the International Advisory board of the National Cancer Institute.

Jishu Shi is a Professor of Vaccine Immunology at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University. He is also a Fellow at the Biosecurity Research Institute and the Founding Director of U.S.-China Center for Animal Health (2010-), Kansas State University. Having worked at Pfizer and multiple academic institutions in the U.S. in the last three decades, Dr. Shi’s research focuses on novel vaccines and diagnostic assays for high consequence animal diseases including classical swine fever (CSF), African swine fever (ASF), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), other emerging viral diseases of swine in the last decade. Several of his research discoveries have been licensed to the animal health industry for product development. In addition to research, Dr. Shi also teaches DVM students and promotes global collaborations in veterinary medicine education through international partnerships among universities, animal health companies, industry associations, and government agencies.

Dan Barouch received his Ph.D. in immunology from Oxford University and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He is currently the William Bosworth Castle Professor of Medicine and Professor of Immunology at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a member of the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT, and Harvard, and part of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Collaboration for AIDS Vaccine Discovery. His laboratory focuses on studying the immunology and virology of HIV-1 infection and developing novel vaccine and eradication strategies. His group has also applied their vaccine expertise to preclinical and clinical studies of other infectious diseases of global significance, including Zika virus, tuberculosis, and most recently SARS-CoV-2.

Malone is a specialist in clinical research, medical affairs, regulatory affairs, project management, proposal management (large grants and contracts), vaccines and biodefense. This includes writing, developing, reviewing and managing vaccine, bio-threat and biologics clinical trials and clinical development strategies. He has been involved in developing, designing, and providing oversight of approximately forty phase 1 clinical trials and twenty phase 2 clinical trials, as well as five phase 3 clinical trials. He has served as medical director/medical monitor on approximately forty phase 1 clinical trials, and on twenty phase 2 clinical trials, including those run at vaccine-focused Clinical Research Organizations. He has served as principal investigator on some of these. Examples of his infectious disease pathogen advanced (clinical phase) development oversight experience include HIV, Influenza (seasonal and pandemic), Plague, Anthrax, VEE/EEE/WEE, Tularemia, Tuberculosis, Ebola, Zika, Ricin toxin, Botulinum toxin, and Engineered pathogens. In many cases, this experience has included vaccine product development, manufacturing, regulatory compliance, and testing (manufacturing release and clinical) aspects. In most cases, his oversight responsibilities have included clinical trial design, regulatory and ethical compliance, and laboratory assay strategy, design, testing and performance.Dr. Malone has extensive research and development experience (bench to bedside) in the areas of pre-clinical discovery research, clinical trials, vaccines, gene therapy, bio-defense, repurposing drugs for infectious diseases, high throughput screening and immunology. He has over twenty years of management and leadership experience in academia, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, as well as in governmental and non-governmental organizations. He often serves as study section chairperson for NIAID contract study sections relating to biodefense medical product development. Scientifically trained at UC Davis, UC San Diego, and at the Salk Institute Molecular Biology and Virology laboratories, Dr. Malone is an internationally recognized scientist (virology, immunology, molecular biology) and is known as one of the original inventors of “DNA Vaccination”, “RNA Vaccination” and multiple non-viral DNA and RNA/mRNA delivery technologies. Dr. Malone holds numerous fundamental domestic and foreign patents in the fields of gene delivery, delivery formulations, and vaccines: including DNA and RNA/mRNA vaccines. The current mRNA vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 are based on his late 1980s discoveries and publications Dr. Malone received his medical training at Northwestern University (MD) and Harvard University (Clinical Research Post Graduate) medical schools, and in Pathology at UC Davis. Robert has a history of assembling and managing expert teams that focus on solving complicated biodefense challenges to meet US Government requirements. He was instrumental in enabling the PHAC/rVSV ZEBOV (“Merck Ebola”) vaccine to move forward quickly towards BLA and (now recently granted) licensure. Dr. Malone got the project on track in support of DoD/DTRA and NewLink Genetics, recruited organizations to team with USAMRIID/WRAIR to develop the immunoassays, put WHO and Norwegian government philanthropic leadership in touch with Pentagon leadership to expedite the initial WRAIR clinical and ring vaccination trials, recruited a management team, recruited Merck vaccines to purchase the product candidate from NewLink, helped write and edit the clinical trials developed by the World Health Organization and lead the development of the BARDA and DTRA contracts - yielding over 200M$ in resources. Dr. Malone’s early involvement in this project allowed for the Merck vaccine to be developed very rapidly.

Robert Flisiak is a head of Department of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology of the Medical University of Bialystok, Poland, as well as previous Dean (2005-2008) and vice-Rector (2008-2012) at this University. He earned his medical education at the Medical University of Bialystok, and completed training there in internal medicine (1988) and infectious diseases (1991). In 1991-92 he completed research training at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and additional clinical training in London and Salzburg. Professor Robert Flisiak is current President of Polish Association of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases, President of the Central European Hepatologic Collaboration, President of the Polish Expert Group for HBV and the past President of the Polish Association for the Study of Liver. He is also Editor in Chief of the Clinical and Experimental Hepatology. Editor and author of chapters in several handbooks, including Editor of polish edition of „Harrison – infectious diseases”, and recently published 4 volume of handbook „Infectious and parasitic diseases”. Scientific activity of prof. Flisiak was focussed on infectious diseases and hepatology, and his scientific achievements include 345 publications registered in the Web of Science Core Collection (h-index: 40, more than 12000citations). Prof. Flisiak participated in almost 200 clinical trials as principal investigator, country coordinator or world leading investigator. He was a coordinator of number of multicenter, investigator-initiated clinical studies.

Amina Kadi, medical biologist. After my studies of pharmacy and specialty in medical biology, I passed the hospital practitioner competition to be able to practice in hospital, my passion forever. In addition to my missions as a biologist, particularly in the interpretation of medical analyzes results for optimal patient care, I am interested in clinical research. Regarding Covid, I did a first work in 2020 on the interest of Covid serology in the interpretation of weakly positive Covid PCRs. My second study was about vaccination, bein very promising, against this virus. Indeed, it was essential to know and follow the kinetics of human response following vaccination to help determination of future vaccine strategy.

Rafael Resque has a degree in Pharmacy from the University Center of Pará (2004), Specialization in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Lutheran University of Brazil (2005), Master in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Federal University of Pará (2010) and PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Federal University of Pará (2015), currently serves as Adjunct Professor C, Level II at the Federal University of Amapá and as a permanent professor of the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PPGCF) and the Graduate Program in Health Sciences (PPGCS). Has experience in Genetics and Molecular Biology with emphasis on Human and Medical Genetics, Population Genetics and Pharmacogenetics, working mainly on the following topics: Ancestry, Mixed Latin American Populations, Interethnic Mixture, Genetic Markers of Ancestry, Molecular Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Virology.

Leander Grode (1970) joined VPM in May, 2003. As Manager, he was responsible for all of VPM´s projects until June, 2008. After being Director of Business Development since 2008 he became CSO and procurator of VPM in April 2013. Since June 2019 Dr. Grode is Managing Director of VPM. He studied biology in Giessen and Frankfurt/Main with focus on cell biology and zoology. As an exchange student, he visited the University of California San Francisco in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics in the lab of Prof. John Watson. He graduated in 1997 with a degree in biology at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics in Frankfurt/Main in the Department of Molecular Membrane Biology under Prof. Hartmut Michel. In the year 2000 he graduated as a PhD at the Max Planck Institute of Infection Biology in the Department of Immunology under Prof. Stefan H.E. Kaufmann. The focus of his thesis was vaccine development against tuberculosis based on live carriers, such as samonella or mycobacterium bovis BCG. Between 2001 and 2003 Leander Grode was the coordinator of the vaccine development group at the MPI in the Department of Immunology.

Margarida Duarte graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 1986 in Lisbon. She received her master degree in Biotechnology/Molecular Biology in 1991 by the Gulbenkian Institute of Science/ Nova University of Lisbon (UNL), and her doctorate in 2020 by the Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology António Xavier/UNL. Both degrees were obtained in the field of Virology working on African swine fever virus mainly in strain characterization, sequencing analysis, gene expression and production of recombinants to study gene function. She joined the National Laboratory of Veterinary Research (LNIV) in January 1990, the National Institute of Biological Resources (INRB, I.P.) in 2006, and the National Institute of Agrarian and Veterinarian Research (INIAV, I.P.) in 2012. During this 30-year period, she her interests were mainly focused in African swine fever virus (ASFV), Parvovirus, Coronavirus, rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV), myxoma virus, canine adenovirus and porcine circovirus. She has been responsible for the virological diagnosis of swine, cats, wild carnivores, dogs and rabbits’ viroses. She developed several molecular and serological diagnostic methods, some listed in the OIE manuals, and was Head/Participant in several national and international Research Projects. She published 28 manuscripts in international peered review journals, more than 100 newsletters and more than 16 papers in Portuguese magazines for undifferentiated public. She is a member of Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health (CIISA) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine since 2013. From mid 2017 she coordinated a National Plan for the Control of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (Dispatch 4757/17, 31 May, MAFDR), through Project +Coelho 1 (co-coordination) and Project +Coelho 2 (full coordination) that aims the recovery of the wild rabbit populations and joins together 9 private and governmental institutions. Her current scientific interests are focused on animal infectious diseases, pathogenesis, phylogenetics, evolution, diagnosis methods, and vaccines.

Hiroshi Shiku is a professor in the Department of Personalized Cancer Immunotherapy at Mie University. He has been working on analysis of molecular characteristics of tumor antigens and T cells in anti-tumor immune responses, and also development of immunotherapeutic approaches for cancer. He has developed a novel protein-based cancer vaccine with unique antigen delivery system of cholesterol-bearing hydrophobized polysaccharides (CHP). He more recently has been also developing adoptive cell therapy with TCR gene-transduced T cells aiming at developing comprehensive cancer immunotherapy.

Carina L Carvalho She Graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 2003, and holds a PhD in Veterinary Sciences since 2017. Since 2019, she is assistant researcher at the National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV I.P.), within the scope of the Fight-two project (PTDC/CVT-CVT / 29062/2017-PT2020), which aims the development of an oral vaccine to control RHDV2 in the wild rabbit. She has developed her research activities in the diagnosis and study of viral diseases of the rabbit, namely rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus type 2 (RHDV2) and myxoma virus, and other pathogens that affect the wild populations of the European wild rabbit and Iberian-hare, as well as on the molecular characterization and phylogenetic studies of these agents.

Ziyang Xu, Ph.D, is currently a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, and an MD-PhD candidate in the graduating class of 2022. He graduated summa cum laude from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA in 2015, receiving a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics. He received his Ph.D from Pharmacology Graduate Group of the University of Pennsylvania in 2020. His research mainly focuses on using synthetic nucleic acids to direct vivo production of next-generation nanoparticle vaccines for enhanced adaptive immunity and reduced dose requirement. He has successfully applied this model to infectious diseases (SARS-CoV-2, HIV, and influenza) and cancer (melanoma). He currently has 21 publications, including 7 first-author manuscripts in journals such as Advanced Science, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Cancer immunology Research. He currently also serves in the editorial board of Frontiers in Tropical Diseases.

Lingwood Daniel research centers on defining how biochemical and biophysical principles of B cell antigen recognition control targeting by the antibody responses elicited by vaccines. Through this work I have defined how gene-encoded antigen ‘pattern’ recognition motifs exist within the human antibody repertoire and can serve to naturally re-center antibody recognition upon normally ‘difficult to see’ universal vaccine targets influenza virus, HIV and also gram-negative bacteria.

Suheil Fayek Simaan has obtained his MD from the American University of Beirut and General Surgical training at the Cleveland Metro Gen Hospital and the Mayo Clinic. He has also received his Cancer Surgery training at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center NYC. He has served as an Editor in Chief of the journal Advances of Medical Science.

Abdalla Abo Taleb is one of the most profound experts in healthcare policy and regulations in the Middle East. His expertise extend from HTA & Reimbursement policies to regulatory and supply chain strategies in the public sector. He has been involved in the fields of health economics, outcomes research, and reimbursement policy within the healthcare industry for 15 years, with experience across the pharmaceutical, biologicals and vaccines. And now works for WHO as a project manager at health care reforming area. Abdalla Abotaleb graduated in faculty of pharmacy then obtained a post-graduate in health economics followed by a PhD in Health Economics & Policy form York University. He also has a degree in Project management professional (PMP), Pharm. D certificate and a Master of business administration (MBA). He, in addition to being a committee member and project manager in a number of national projects in many countries including Germany. United Kingdom, Egypt, Algeria, Sudan, Russia and Poland, He is a very active researcher with tens of publication across different well recognized organizing including ISPOR, ESMO, ASCO, ECCO, iHEA. HTAI, and EAHE. He has been a true contributor to several public and industrial projects in Egypt, his homeland. Catarina E Hioe has established a research program that focuses on HIV immunology since 1998. The program has been supported by research funds from NIH, VA, and non-federal grants. The Hioe laboratory pursues a number of research projects with the common goal of understanding better HIV envelope-mediated immunity and pathogenesis in order to design more effective prophylactic and therapeutic measures against HIV. The key projects currently active in the lab include the use of immune complexes as a vaccine strategy to elicit effective antibody and helper CD4 T cell responses against HIV, the evaluation of neutralizing and non-neutralizing activities of anti-HIV antibodies, and the exploration of biological consequences of HIV interaction with bacteria.

Ming-Hsi Huang is an Associate Investigator at National Institute of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology (NIIDV) of National Health Research Institutes (NHRI), Taiwan. He obtained his PhD degree in 2004 in Materials Chemistry from University Montpellier I in France. From 2005-2009, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Vaccine Research and Development Center of NHRI. From 2009-2014, he worked as an Assistant Investigator in NIIDV of NHRI. His major research interest at NIIDV has been focused on the development of novel delivery vehicles for generating vaccine-induced long-term immunity as well as immunoregulatory agents for manipulating effective/harmful immune responses. Dr. Huang's research group was the pioneer who engineers amphiphilic bioresorbable polymers as emulsifiers to bring on novel emulsion adjuvants in the pursuit of innovative vaccine design. These studies were involved in the applications of micro-encapsulation technology for a single-dose multivalent vaccine against emerging infectious diseases, in particular influenza-associated illness and hand-foot-mouth disease. During the past few years, he aimed to launch a mechanistic study on how emulsion adjuvants interacting with immune cells and progressively elucidate the role of manufacturing process as well as each ingredient linking with vaccine immunogenicity. He also extends these aspects to optimize an appropriate vaccination route, such as subcutaneous, intramuscular or mucosal administration. These features are of great interest for further investigations on sustained delivery for cancer immunotherapy. Dr Huang has published at least 40 SCI journal articles, 1 book chapter, and granted 5 inventions (total 9 grants of patent right in multiple countries). Andrew Ward obtained a B.S. in Biology from Duke University in 2001. Upon graduation, he moved to The Scripps Research Institute where he obtained his Ph.D. with Ronald Milligan, Ph.D. in cryoEM (2008) and conducted his postdoctoral work in structural biology and biophysics of membrane proteins with Geoffrey Chang, Ph.D. (2010). He has been a member of the Scripps faculty since 2010 and leads a lab that is primarily focused on immunotherapeutic and vaccine development to combat pathogens such as HIV, influenza, Coronaviruses, Ebola, hepatitis C, and malaria. The Ward lab uses electron microscopy to image viral and malarial antigens in complex with neutralizing antibodies and the structural data are then used to improve antibody-based therapies and rationally design vaccines. The Ward lab has published extensively on cryoEM studies of HIV envelope glycoprotein, including the first high-resolution structure of the soluble SOSIP trimer. The Ward lab also solved the structure of a human coronavirus spike protein in 2016, which enabled structure-based vaccine design to create stabilized, pre-fusion subunit vaccine candidates SARS CoV-2 spike proteins.
